Reading Homework
Spectrum Academy has students from Kindergarten to 8th grade assign students to read 20 minutes a day for homework.. Each student has a school planner they bring home with them each day that contains a weekly reading log in it. For a student to receive credit, they need to have a parent signature signed in their reading log each week. For this assignment, students need to read at least 20 minutes 6 days a week OR 30 minutes 4 days a week. Identify with your son or daughter any kind of book, news article, magazine, or resource, anything that will interest him or her in reading. This does NOT include subtitles from TV shows, video games, or movies. Some students may read while listening to an audio book. Audio books can be quite fun to listen to in the car. Local libraries are a great resource to find many wonderful books and audio-books for free, without needing to make expensive purchases. Studies prove that your child will do better in school. Why read 20 minutes a night at home? Click Here I-Ready Students take an academic reading level diagnostic assessment at the beginning, middle, and end of the year through the I-Ready program.. Spectrum Academy also has students do online I-Ready lessons at least 60 minutes a week in class.. For students, I-Ready can be a fun way to learn important reading skills.. The program is known for helping students improve at least one entire academic grade level by the end of the school year, just from using it only 60 minutes a week. Regardless if your son or daughter is behind or ahead in their academic reading abilities, this I-Ready program is an incredible tool that customizes itself to meet their specific reading needs. Learn more at I-ready.com. Click Here Speed Reading Students take a Dibels speed reading assessment at the beginning, middle, and end of the year. The average adult can read out loud at 150 words per minute and recall a summary of 3 or more details of what they read. Our goal is for every 6th grade student to be able to read 150 words per minute or faster by the end of the year. Once this hurdle is passed, students noticeably show an all around improvement in learning with each academic subject. A few minutes of speed reading practice each day is crucial to the future success of your son or daughter's academic career. The Daily Reading The Daily Reading is a daily reading exercise that is one to three paragraphs long . There are a wide variety of readings from short stories to informational texts. At the end of each reading, there are 8 multiple choice questions testing if the student can correctly identify the characters, plot, the main idea, important details, inferences, expressions, or the author's point of view. After students independently read and complete answering the questions, they receive immediate feedback, and get one on one tutoring with the teacher. Immediately they go over what the correct answers are. Each time this teaches students what they missed and why they missed it. This daily exercise is crucial to developing comprehension skills. This teaching tool can dramatically improve your son or daughter's reading skills. Grammar Students will practice identifying parts of speech in sentences on a weekly to monthly basis. Vocabulary The Collections textbook provides new vocabulary at the 6th grade level. Students will review definitions and practice using this vocabulary in sentences. SAGE Utah State Test The dates for the Utah State Test, SAGE, are yet to be announced and calendared. Usually the school administers two practice tests to help familiarize students with the test and reduce test anxiety. One practice test is in the fall and the other practice test is in the winter. The real SAGE Utah State Test will be administered in late Spring, sometime in May. The test provides important data to the school. You will receive test results showing how your child did in comparison with 6th grade student's across the state of Utah in the areas of math, science, reading, and writing.
