What is Social Skills class all about?
"Social Skills" is all about our interactions with the world. It covers the way we understand and respond to rules (both spoken and unspoken), negotiate relationships, communicate with others (verbally and with our body language), maintain our personal selves (with hygiene and health), monitor our behavior, and interpret our community experiences. Why do we teach Social Skills at Spectrum Academy? We believe that every school should teach Social Skills. These lessons could vastly improve relationships, communication, behavior, and transitions into adult life for any student. We know that students on the autism spectrum especially benefit from explicit Social Skills instruction. It's very important at Spectrum Academy-- in fact, it's one of three major parts of our charter (along with academics and sensory integration). High School students interact with explicit social skills instruction through their Transition Planning class. In this class, we add job and life skills to our learning of social skills. What kinds of things happen in Social Skills class? In class, we will be learning some important vocabulary that will shape our understanding of social skills. We will practice being socially appropriate by reading, watching, analyzing, and role playing. We will work together on projects to create greater social understandings. We will be creating Interactive Student Notebooks in class. These are our main venue of classwork. Almost all vocabulary, assignments, journals, etc. will be done through these notebooks. They will be kept in the classroom. What curriculum do you use in Social Skills? Spectrum teachers create many of the lessons based on their own educational backgrounds and experience working with kids with exceptional learning needs. The Spectrum curriculum shows progress across the board for our students each school year, according to data taken throughout the year. We are excited to continue to expand and refine this to show more and more progress! Each year, different curriculum is pulled in to supplement these lessons. For example, a 7th grade student will receive Spectrum-specific lessons, the USOE's Prevention Dimensions curriculum, lessons based on "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens," and will participate in Junior Achievement's "BizTown." |
